Mark Romanek believed that the three main characters acted with intense dignity. He noted that they were not materialistic and they were not looking for power, but they just desired to acknowledge their love for one another. An example he mentioned was how Ruth tried to seek redemption by attempting to set right a big mistake she’d made. He found the “graceful place of acceptance that Kathy comes to at the end” the most moving aspect of the film.
